Polpetto is the latest venue by restaurateur Russell Norman; the man (with a plan) behind the brilliant Polpo, Ape and Bird and Spuntino. This relaxed and cosy little sister soho gem serves up stunning Venetian sharing plates and also boasts queues of diners stretching out the doors.
The industrial and rustic venue boasts 60 seats, an aperitivo bar, an open kitchen in the basement dining room and if you're lucky enough to nab a spot -a chef’s table. Diners are squeezed onto simple wooden candlelit tables, creating a homely and conversational atmosphere.
The dishes - categorised in to Fish, Meat, Vegetables & Salads, Pizzettes and Cicheti - change regularly, but the quality remains consistently excellent. Highlights included the Beef & pork meatballs with coleslaw & focaccia; the Deep fried squid with zucchini & chilli and the White pizzetta with thyme.
We finished our night with a selection of cocktails; a mix of classics like the Negroni (Beefeater, Campari, sweet vermouth) and more adventurous such as the Rosemary Gimlet (Beefeater Gin, lime cordial, Rosemary).
